2 months to go - the "notification stage"
- Notify your key organizations and entities such as your landlord, bank, post office, doctor, clubs, etc.
- Organize cancellation and transfer of services such as subscriptions, accounts, insurance, etc.
- Identify a company to help you with your move. Get quotes, compare and decide.
- Identify what you will take, what you will leave and what you will donate to charity. Physically separating these items by room or by floor can be helpful.
- If you have pets, ask your mover about any restrictions, quarantine requirements and timing.
1 month to go - "the organization stage"
- At this point, you should have agreed a move date with your mover.
- Make a detailed, valued inventory of all your possessions. Keep original and give a copy to your moving company.
- Book plane flights, check visa requirements.
- Gather records you will need at your new home (e.g., school transcript, medical history, wills, etc.)
2 weeks to go - "the implementation stage"
- Cancel any home delivery services (e.g. newspapers, drycleaner, etc.)
- Arrange cancellation and final billing of utilities.
- Arrange date for turnover of your apartment.
1 week to go - "the homestretch"
- Identify and organize items you will need to carry with you such as passports, cash, and jewelry.
- Keep dehumidifiers and aircons operating for the several days leading up to the move in order to lower humidity in carpets, pillows, stuffed furniture, linen, etc., before it is wrapped and packed.
The day of the move - "The big day"
- Be present during the packing. Inevitably questions will arise that need your immediate attention and decision.
- Walk through with the foreman/supervisor and point out items that require special care and crating.
- Discuss timing (start time, lunch breaks and end times.)
- At the end of the last day, make a final check around the house.
- Congratulate yourself - you've done a good job!
