You have just moved into a new home in perhaps even in a new city. Selecting art for your home or home away from home can be an exciting adventure and a source of enjoyment, but where do you start?

If art is a passion, which could in turn becomes an investment, the trick is to nurture your talent for recognising what touches you deeply.

Whether you purchase a piece of artwork because it matches or because someone says it's an "important" piece of art, it is your choice. However to purchase or commission a great artwork that you love and build the room around it, that is an experience.

Ask. Visit as many exhibitions and art galleries as you can. Gallery staff can be helpful guides in your education of art. Question friends or colleagues on their choices and experiences. Ask questions about the artist's chosen subject, inspiration, and technique. If you buy the piece, you'll appreciate it even more.

Look, look and look again. Read magazines or books on art, join gallery mailing lists, seek out opportunities to view artwork - its everywhere.

Learn. Familiarize yourself with common terms used in the art world. Medium; the material the artist uses to produce the work (bronze, silver, fabric, or oil, watercolor, or acrylic paints. Paintings may be created on numerous substrates: canvas, wood, metal or paper, in a single type of paint or a combination.

Critique. When investing in art, whether it be for pleasure or long-term value, choose only quality - this will ensure your artwork maintains its colour and value over the years.

Trust. You know more than you think! When did you last notice the decoration in a friend's house or in a magazine, a great haircut or clothes? It's very often the style that catches our eye. Begin a scrapbook with images that appeal to you. Trust your intuition.

If choosing low cost decorative art, one trick is to play with texture, choose something that engages you and connects to the style of space you seek to create.

It is likely that you will find yourself drawn to works that are in colors or themes that will naturally suit your home. Contemporary, traditional or eastern decorating style, a new home can also be a fabulous opportunity to experience new style.

A truly stylish home breaks rules and represents the personalities of the people living there.

We know where the heart is, how you choose to express it through your art, this creates the welcoming warmth of collected treasures, a place to truly call home.

Once you've educated yourself and have fallen in love with a work of art...buy it, take it home and enjoy it.
