| The Rainbow Project is a charity that was established in 1999 by a group of parents of young children with autism and their child-care professionals who saw a need in Hong Kong for autism-specific educationfor children of primary school age.
The aims of the group were to recognise, defend and promote the rights and needs of children with autism. The goal of the project was to establish educational facilities which would cater specifically for children with autism aged 3 to 16.
The first Rainbow Project classroom, for children, for children aged 5 to 11 from a multinational English-speaking background, opened in 2001 at Hong Kong Academy. The second opened at Sunshine House Preparatory School in Tung Chung in January 2006. Sadly, Sunshine Preparatory School (Tung Chung) closed in June 2007 but invited Rainbow to open a centre for three to six years old on their Pre-school campus also in Tung Chung. Each classroom is under the care of a specially trained teacher, two to three teaching assistants, a speech therapist and an occupational therapist and currently caters for a maximum of seven students. With support from the host schools, a number of Rainbow students have been fully or partially integrated into their mainstrea, programmes.
The Rainbow Project's next goal is to establish a world-class resource centre and classroom for children aged 12 to 16 in Sai Ying Pun on Hong Kong Island. With this perspective, the project aims not only to provide children affected by ASD with accessible education appropriate to their needs, but also to provide the wider community of Hong Kong with training, seminars and other autism-awareness related activities. |
